I was a skeptic when this game first came out. In the past, Lego games were mediocre PC and Nintendo 64 property cross-overs with boring gameplay and bad graphics. Lego Star Wars: The Origanal Trilogy redeemed Lego games for me, offering hours of entertaining, funny and challenging gameplay featuring characters and locations from the origanal trilogy.
With six unique and engaging levels for each movie, Lego Star Wars takes the classis scenes of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and twists them into lego form. In many ways, the story breaks off from G-level canon, inserting comedic and theatrical features that overall better the game. In close combat, Chewie can pull the arms of Stormtroopers, while Princess Leah slaps them in the face, holding one hand at her hip. In Jabba’s palace, you can build radios that emmit a rock version of the Imperial March, which makes the surrounding hostile Gammorean Guards rock out and air guitar on their axes.
In this game, the challenge is not to keep your character alive; in fact, your character can die infinatively. The only bad thing is about being killed in this game is you loose a certain number of “studs”-the Lego currency in this game with which you can buy extra characters, ships and special features- every time you get decapitated.
Overall, I think that this game was wonderful. While it is goofy, it’s fun, addictive, and challenging, reminding me of the days of puzzle/combat games like the Phantom Menace video game adaption. While the graphics might not be as good as the X-Box 360’s, the in-and-out, to-the-point gameplay is perfect for my console of choice, the Play Station Portable. I highly suggest this game to anyone.
